University of Montana 2000-2001 Catalog

Department of Health Professions

Bobette Pattee, Chair

Special Degree and Certificate Requirements

The health professions programs in Human Services, Medical Laboratory Technology, Pharmacy Technology, Practical Nursing, Respiratory Care, and Surgical Technology have waiting lists for admittance. Interested persons are encouraged to apply at least one year prior to anticipated school attendance. Students on the waiting lists are encouraged to complete some of the courses required in the first semester to help reduce their loads once they are admitted into their programs.

Prior to entry in the clinical portion of these programs, students must be tested for tuberculosis with the PPD (Purified Protein Derivative) or chest x-ray, and give the results to the Health Professions department chair at the College. If the test is positive, the student must present a letter written by a physician to the department chair stating that the student is under the physician's care and can continue in the clinical portion of the program. Students are required to receive the hepatitis B vaccine (HBV) prior to clinical laboratory experiences and potential exposure to blood-borne pathogens. Usually three vaccines are required and may be obtained at Student Health Services on the Mountain Campus. It is suggested that students start the series of vaccines upon program acceptance. CPR training must be completed prior to entering the clinical portion of training. Eye exams are required for surgical technology students because of their work with lasers in surgery.

The related studies requirements are included in the following courses of study. Refer to the Academic Policies and Procedures section of this catalog for the specific requirements.

Students must pass all courses with a minimum grade of "C" in order to continue in their programs and to graduate. It is expected that, following program acceptance, all courses in the student's chosen health program must be completed in one semester beyond the stated length of the program.

Repeating a failed course will be permitted based on available class space and acceptance will be in the order identified by the matriculation plan. Any single course may be attempted a maximum of two times only. Repeated failure in a course will result in removal from the program. Reinstatement to the program is in compliance with the policy on reinstatement.

Students are expected to take professional examinations upon completion of their programs. Students are responsible for filing required forms, associated fees, and grade transcripts. More information can be obtained by contacting the Health Professions department chair.

Course Fees and Supplies

Most programs in the Health Professions Department include courses with course fees and special supplies requirements. To obtain a complete listing of these additional items and costs, call the College of Technology Admissions Office at 243-7882.

There are at least 50 service providers within the state of Montana that deliver various forms of support services to individuals who experience disabilities. These programs prepare teachers and aides to provide educational services to school-aged individuals or human service professionals to provide adult services in multiple settings such as residential, vocational, and adult day services. These human service positions are frequently varied across types of disabilities and types of settings as designated by federal and state law and/or funding agency at state and federal levels. Funding and support may come from the Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services (Division of Disability Services including Vocational Rehabilitation, Division of Addictive and Mental Disorders, and the Division of Health Policy and Services) or the Montana Office of Public Instruction (Special Education Division).

The certificate program is a maximum of two semesters and one summer session. The A.A.S. degree includes four semesters and one summer session. There are a significant number of credits in the Human Services program that include knowledge bases from education, social work, psychology, instruction, legal aspects, and supervised clinical experiences within applied settings. Required general education courses include written and oral communications, mathematics, and human relations. Each semester throughout the program includes an applied clinical experience which will expand and intensify For those individuals working toward the A.A.S. degree.

Certificate completers will be ready for employment into entry-level positions and completers of the associate of applied science degree will be ready for mid-management positions within some agencies. Medical Laboratory Technology-A.A.S. Degree

Medical laboratory technicians work in hospitals, clinics, physicians' offices, public health departments, and commercial and industrial laboratories under the direction of a medical technologist, physician, or pathologist. They perform a wide variety of complex biochemical, bacteriological, serological, hematological, and other diagnostic tests. They perform such tasks as collecting blood specimens; making microscopic and chemical examinations of urine, blood, and body fluids; performing cross match techniques; and culturing and identifying bacteria. The technician distinguishes abnormal results from normal results and reports to the physician to facilitate patient care. The Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) program is a five semester program. The first two semesters comprise the Pre-MLT Program. Students are accepted into the MLT Professional Program summer semester, if they have successfully completed the first year course work. Successful completion is defined as obtaining a grade of "C" or better for each of the courses in the first two semesters.

Students are awarded the Associate of Applied Science degree upon successful completion of the program. The MLT program may be completed in four semesters, plus one summer session, or fewer, depending upon the educational background of the entering student. During the first year, the student takes general education and preparatory courses. Spring semester of the second year is spent in clinical laboratory facilities which have agreed to be training centers. This may require students to complete internships outside of the Missoula area. Students must have transportation available.

The professional MLT curriculum consists of an integrated sequence of required courses which is designed to be completed in consecutive semesters. Students will be allowed to repeat courses one time only. Students must complete the MLT Professional Program within four semesters.

Upon successful completion of the program, graduates are eligible to write national examinations to become certified Medical Laboratory Technicians.
