The Maureen and Mike Mansfield Library comprises the heart of
UM's library system. Holdings include over 902,000 volumes distributed
on five levels in the humanities, sciences, and social sciences
disciplines as well as extensive collections of periodicals,
maps, U.S. Government documents, United Nations publications,
and microforms. The Reserve Materials Collection makes available
frequently used materials that supplement courses currently
being taught at the University. Archives and Special Collections
include significant items on Montana history, Montana writers,
businesses, and political figures, including former Ambassador
and Senator Mansfield's congressional papers, and the official
records of the University. GrizNet is the library's online public
access catalog to its varied collections. LaserNet is the library's
electronic resources network, providing access to current periodical
literature from over 100 databases. Both GrizNet and LaserNet
provide for external dial-up computer access. Interlibrary Loan
supplements the collection, offering access to other information
worldwide.
The Mansfield Library Instructional Media Services (IMS) is
a centralized audiovisual resource of media materials, equipment,
and production services located on the first floor of the Social
Sciences Building. It incorporates viewing and listening facilities
for all standard media formats such as video and CD recordings;
Mac and PC computers for previewing multimedia software and
for accessing the electronic resources of the Mansfield Library;
and a do-it-yourself multimedia development workstation. Music
scores and music reference works are also available for convenient
use by listeners. All materials are circulated as library materials
to faculty and enrolled students. Audiovisual equipment is loaned
to both students and faculty to facilitate the use of non-print
materials in connection with academic pursuits.
The media collection has nearly 100,000 items on GrizNet. Items
include motion pictures, slides, filmstrips, videotapes, audio
tape recordings, books on tape, videodiscs, phonograph records,
CDs, art prints, study prints, transparencies, maps, and interactive
multimedia software. The film and video collection also enjoys
a national reputation through interlibrary loan and film rental.
In addition to their media collection, the Mansfield Library
Instructional Media Services offers instructional products:
color copying from slides, negatives, and original material
and xerographic copying; color slides from computer data; color
and B &W film processing and general photography; slide,
text, and graphic scanning; poster lamination and shrink wrapping;
fax service; audiotape and videotape duplication; color transparencies;
and all types of audiovisual equipment.
The College of Technology libraries at both the East and West
Campuses contain collections of over 13,000 items, including
books, journals, videotapes, films, filmstrips, and audio tape
recording, supporting the curriculum of the College. The East
Campus Library offers Westlaw and Montlaw electronic resources
as well as access to the electronic resources of the Mansfield
Library on the main campus.
All areas provide for a variety of orientation opportunities
designed to acquaint students with general and specific subject-oriented
resources. Regular, interim, and holiday hours are permanently
posted at each site. More detailed information about the Maureen
and Mike Mansfield Library can be found on the web at: http://www.lib.umt.edu
