The Maureen and Mike Mansfield Center
The 1997-98 University of Montana Catalog

Philip West, Director

The mission of the Center is education, broadly defined. Center faculty and staff teach courses and conduct research. The Center also organizes conferences, seminars, and institutes that are national and international in scope and that are rooted in historical and cultural perspectives. The cultural focus within this broad educational mission is Asian Studies and American-Asian relations. The distinctive contribution of the Center is rigorous cross-cultural and cross-disciplinary teaching, research, and service. Key elements in defining the Center mission and in using the Mansfield name are the life, work, and wishes of Mike Mansfield.

The Mansfield Center seeks to enhance the quality and reputation of the Asian Studies Program at The University of Montana. Its program theme of Ethics in Public Affairs builds on the widely-shared memory of Mike Mansfield as a statesman of unusual integrity and ability in public service. Questions of ethics in public affairs are defined increasingly in cross-cultural terms, with particular emphasis on the way ethics and public affairs issues are phrased in Asian contexts and Asian ways of thinking."
