October 30 - December 22, 2007 Sacks Appeal: Designs on the Shopping Bag November 28, 7pm Meloy Gallery This dazzling exhibition showcases some of the finest shopping bag art of the 20th century, featuring designs by artists such as Roy Lichtenstein, David Hockney, Keith Haring, Joseph Beuys, Barbara Kruger, and Annie Leibowitz.
In conjunction with the Sacks Appeal exhibition, UM Professor Bobby Tilton's art education students worked with area elementary and middle school students to create related downtown Missoula exhibitions of shopping bag art. Middle school students' art is on display at Miss Zula's, located at 111 N. Higgins Ave. Elementary school students' art is viewable at Whippersnappers, 129 N. Everyday Objects in Art: Highlighting selections from MMAC's Permanent Collection, this exhibition features works that utilize found objects as material and subject. These works reflect developments in modern art originating with Marcel Duchamp's 'readymades' to assemblage to contemporary trends that blur the boundaries between art and life. Included are works by Kendra Bayer, Stephen Glueckert, Dyna Kuehnle, Cathryn Mallory and more. |

Willem de Kooning, Untitled I November 2, 2007 - February 8, 2008 President's Office Lobby, Main Hall MMAC is pleased to announce a 6th major art loan from an anonymous collector. Untitled I, by Abstract Expressionist master Willem de Kooning is now available for public viewing in the UM President's Office Lobby. Willem de Kooning (1904 -1997) had a long and productive life. Untitled I, produced when he was 75 years old, uses fragmented forms of a landscape reassembled by his creative use of color and composition offset by lush, active brushstrokes. Hours: Monday - Friday 8am - 5pm

Taqialuk Nana, Dancing Bear, marble, n.d. |
GENEROUS DONATION OF INNUIT ART MMAC recently received a generous donation of Innuit art from Helen Cappadocia. Pictured at left is a sculpture by Taqialuk (Tuk) Nana (b. 1958) of Kinngait (Cape Dorset, Canada). Tuk Nana, who learned to carve by watching his father, is well known for his dancing bear sculptures. This piece is one of seven Innuit artworks donated by Helen Cappadocia. The seven works are currently on view in UM's Main Hall outside the Office of Academic Affairs.
