'30s
Thelma Bjornaby Fox '32 writes, "I have become increasingly grateful for the excellent start Dr. Wesley P. Clark gave me toward the education I have achieved over these many years. When I sat in his classes, I must have known that someday I would see so much about which we read." Thelma resides in Salinas, Calif., and celebrated her 88th birthday on St. Patrick's Day. (Dr. Clark, professor of Latin and Greek, taught at UM from 1921 to 1951.)

Frances Morrell Graves '35, of Snohomish, Wash., would like to visit with historians about her father, Charles T. Morrell, for whom the Seeley Lake area peak, creek and falls are named. Mr. Morrell, a pioneer in territorial Montana, owned a gun and sporting-goods store in Helena and manufactured the first gun made in Montana. James W. "Jim" Love '39 writes that he and Arthur "Art" Pearson '40 both live at Patriots Colony, a military retirement community in Williamsburg, Va. Each earned an army commission from ROTC while at UM. "Neither one of us can remember the other while at school," Jim writes. He claims that is "a sign of being chronologically gifted." Jim served 32 years in the army. Art served five and a half years in WWII and 12 years in the reserves. He worked 38 years with Owens Corning Fiberglass Corp. '50s
Class of 1959: Your 40th class reunion will be held during Homecoming, Oct. 8 and 9, 1999. Watch for information later this summer.

Patricia "Pat" Kabrick Campbell '50 spent five and a half weeks in Humacao, Puerto Rico, last fall working with the Federal Emergency Management Agency in the aftermath of Hurricane Georges. Pat retired in 1990, but soon after was hired by FEMA and has worked in emergency situations across the United States and on St. John's Island. Pat returned from Puerto Rico just in time to join her husband, Donald J. Campbell '51, in hosting the annual Griz-Cat satellite TV party in Richland, Wash..


'60s
James "Jim" Flightner, M.A. '62, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, has announced his retirement as of June 30, 2000. Jim taught Spanish for more than two decades in UM's foreign languages and literature department before becoming dean in 1989.

Kevin S. Smith '64 retired after 23 years with the Beaverton Building Department. "After building our dream home near Smith Rocks in eastern Oregon," he writes, "I intend to go back to my first love, photographing wildlife. I also plan to put many miles on my Gold Wing motorcycle with my wife, Kei."

Howard Joseph "Joe" Ayres, M.A. '66, communications professor at Washington State University, is number eight on the national communication studies' most prolific scholars list. He received Book of the Year and Convention Paper of the Year awards at the National Communication Association's Commission on Communication Apprehension and Avoidance in New York. In a letter praising his WSU colleague, Donald C. Orlich '53, Ph.D. '63, writes that information omits a crucial detail: "Joe is a Butte Kid! He lived at the Columbia Gardens and attended Harrison School...the same school yours truly attended."

Roger Allen Barber '67, J.D. '71, M.B.A. '83 is the new vice chancellor of academic affairs at Montana State University-Northern. Roger has been a faculty member at Northern since 1978. He is married to Mary Van Buskirk '75, J.D. '78. Mary has been a member of the Bosch, Kuhr, Dugdale law firm in Havre since 1978 and a partner since 1981.

Clifford Peterson '67 was named of counsel at the Philadelphia office of Morgan, Lewis & Bockus, a 229-lawyer firm with more than 900 lawyers practicing in the United States, Europe and Asia. Clifford advises clients on litigation involving antitrust, civil and criminal antitrust issues.

Richard D. "Rick" Alexander '69 was re-elected to his third four-year term on the Grossmont-Cuyamaca College District Governing Board in East San Diego County. Rick also is a commercial real estate broker and serves as vice president of the East County Economic Development Council. He and his wife, Joan, have two daughters.

Sandra "Sandy" Pramenko Kravik '69, a history and government teacher at Lake City High School in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, recently had an Internet teaching guide she designed featured on C-SPAN's Booknotes. Sandy, a C-SPANChampion Teacher," wrote the guide to accompany a text on Soviet espionage in America during the Stalin era. Her guide included discussion, reading and writing assignments. Sandy has used C-SPAN in her classes for years. She received no money for her guide, but said that wasn't expected. "I think it's payback, since I use so many of their programs,"she explains. "The value is in exposing the students to educational television."


'70s
Ronald L. "Ron" Molen '71 is the new executive director of the Cincinnati Parks Foundation. Ron is the current president of the Cincinnati Society of Fund-Raising Executives and a member of the board of directors of the Cincinnati Society of Association Executives. He resides in West Chester, Ohio.

Ronald D. "Ron" Remple '71 is the new deputy director of the California Department of Fish and Game, after working in the department for 26 years. Ron will direct activities focusing on the conservation of the state's aquatic and terrestrial habitats, its endangered species and how water will be apportioned in the state for the next 50 years. "Although my responsibilities keep me traveling around the state," Ron e-mails, "I still find time for fishing in the Sierras and white-water rafting on rivers throughout the West."

Richard Cohen '73 is a free-lance musician in Casper, Wyo. A bass player in the Casper Symphony, Richard also is organist for the First Church of Christ Scientist and pianist for the Petroleum Club.

Randel E. "Randy" Morger '74 was named public information manager for Sanders, a Lockheed Martin Company in Nashua, N.H. Randy joins Sanders following 24 years in the U.S. Air Force, where his duties included service at the Pentagon, commanding broadcast operations in the Pacific and Saudi Arabia during Operation Desert Storm, and heading media activities for U.S. interventions into Somalia, Haiti and Rwanda. His final military assignment was at the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE), Belgium, as the chief of Public Affairs Plans and deputy director of Public Information for Allied Command Europe. Randy, his wife Sally, and their two children reside in Amherst, N.H.

Joy Nelson Ott '79, M.B.A.'91, was appointed by Gov. Marc Racicot to a two-year term on the Montana Board of Investments. Joy, the senior regional credit officer for Norwest Bank Montana and Norwest Bank Wyoming, resides in Billings. She currently serves on the Finance Committee for the Yellowstone Art Museum and is a past board member for Montana Special Olympics.


'80s
Betsy Bach, M.A. '80, professor of communication studies, became UM's first-ever assistant provost for retention and enrollment management in January. Betsy will serve on the University's enrollment management team, work with Provost Robert Kindrick to improve academic advising and student retention, and supervise the University College. Betsy began teaching at UM in 1984 and was chair of the communication studies department for four years.

Theodore R. "Ted" Catton '83, M.A. '86, received the George Perkins Marsh prize for the best book in environmental history in 1997-98. This prize, awarded every other year by the American Society for Environmental History, is for his book Inhabited Wilderness: Indians, Eskimos, and National Parks in Alaska. Ted, a public historian with the Historical Research Association, lives in Missoula with his wife, Kristen Gough Catton '83, and their three sons.

Bowen "Bo" Larsen '83 is coordinator of external communications for the John C. Lincoln Health Network in Phoenix. He and his wife, Marci, have one daughter, Kristen, and another due in April. "You know when I am in Missoula," Bo e-mails. "I drive a Volkswagen van with "Go Griz" license plates."

Marlee Beth Miller '85 was promoted to vice president of marketing and communications at the Sacramento Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce in California. Marlee previously worked as the senior editor for the American Association of University Women in Washington, D.C., and managed the communications department for the Greater Houston Partnership.

Craig Alan Holden, M.F.A. '86, received kudos in The New York Times Book Review for his suspense thriller Four Corners of Night. This multilayered morality tale follows the story of a kidnaped 12-year-old child and the narrator's memories of an earlier child's disappearance. Hailing Craig as "a talented writer," the review encourages readers to hang on, "if only to see how far beyond its conventions a talented writer can take the genre."

Michelle Willits Cunningham '88 e-mails, " I traded the bright lights of Las Vegas for the flickering ones of fireflies in southern Illinois in 1998." A former features copy editor for an entertainment tabloid in Las Vegas, Michelle now is an assistant director in the public affairs department for Southern Illinois University-Carbondale. Her responsibilities include Web site creation, management and coverage of the College of Liberal Arts and the College of Science. "I married Steven, a sports writer at the Southern Illinoisan, in July 1998. We are expecting our first child in September. Our only debate is whether the baby will be dressed in UM or Vanderbilt colors!"

Judy Tipton Killen '88 moved to Powell, Wyo. in 1993 to become news editor of The Powell Tribune. Elected to the board of directors of the Wyoming Press Association in January, Judy e-mails that "Class Notes" is one of the few ways she has of keeping track of her classmates: "The magazine is a great way to stay informed about campus activities."

Mary H. Sexton , M.Ed. '88, recently was elected Teton County's first female commissioner. A granddaughter of Dr. Howard Bateman, a surgeon who settled in Choteau in the early 1900s, Mary's interests in the environment, conservation, health care and local business run deep. She also is the marketing associate and part owner of the Best Western Stage Stop Inn in Choteau, a real estate consultant, and a guide and naturalist in the Bob Marshall and Scapegoat wildernesses. Mary has a 12-year-old daughter, Maggie, and is married to Rich Clough '67 of Helena.

David J."Dave" Worthington '88, M.A.'91. Following three years on the Mariana Islands in Micronesia and two years in Honolulu studying wildlife management issues of Micronesia, American Samoa and the Hawaiian Islands, Dave has moved closer to home. He now is a biologist with the National Park Service at Capitol Reef National Park in Torrey, Utah. Dave admits to missing the green and warmth of the tropics, but is "ecstatic to be living and working in a locale as beautiful as Capitol Reef." He e-mails that he "looks forward to driving to Montana regularly."

Michelle Cotton Pingree '89, a resident of Spokane, Wash., manages health education at Eastern Washington University. She plans to pursue her master's degree and one day return to Montana. Michelle has a 13-year old daughter.


'90s
Michele Wolfe Jorgenson '90 and her husband, Terry Dean Jorgenson '90, reside in Scottsdale, Ariz. Michele is manager for the North Scottsdale branch of North American Title Company and Terry is safety manager for Hyatt Regency at Gainey Ranch.

Gary Jahrig '92, education reporter for the Missoulian, won his second national Education Writers' Association honor in four years. Gary's weekly "Schools" section received second prize in the 1998 National Awards for Education Reporting in the Special Section or Page category.

Sarah Ewing Prodell '83, '84, assistant news editor at the Missoulian, designs the awarding-winning section.

Brenda Leighton '92 is an employment specialist at Hunter Douglas, Window Fashion Division, in Broomfield, Colo.

Nicole Lyn Marlenee '92, '95, and Jon Jeffrey "Jeff" Root '95 were married Jan. 13 in Las Vegas. Nicole is in her second year of veterinary school at Colorado State University in Fort Collins. Jeff is a mammalogist and zoonotic research associate for the Arthropodborne and Infectious Disease Lab at CSU.

Elizabeth Burton Barth '93 and her husband, David, have been living in New York City for 3 1/2 years. "On Nov. 1, 1998," she writes, "we both ran the New York City Marathon."

Marcus Courtney '93, co-founder of the Washington Alliance for Technology Workers (Wash Tech), is featured in the Dec. 7, 1998, Business Week. An organizer and advocate for workplace rights and public policy issues affecting high-tech workers, Marcus has received front-page coverage in The Seattle Times, the San Jose Mercury News and The Chicago Tribune. His experiences working as a high-tech permatemp in Seattle for ADOBE Systems, Keane Inc. and Microsoft Corp. led Marcus to realize that temporary workers need an advocate before government and industry.

Scott DeShazer '93 and Lara DeShazer '94 live in Missoula with their three sons, Ricky, Tanre and Koahl. Scott is a manager for One Call Locators and Lara is a biology teacher at Sentinel High School.

Patricia Ann "Patti" Burnett '94 is an accredited records technician at the Marcus Daly Memorial Hospital in Hamilton. Patti earned a degree in health information and technology at MSU College of Technology-Great Falls in 1988.

Todd Charles Hull '94 is in his second year as head athletic trainer for the Montana State University-Billings Yellowjackets. He and his wife, Sara Hagen Hull '93, bought a house in Billings Heights and have enjoyed remodeling it. Sara, a full-time mom to son, Tyler, works from home. Todd writes, "Although the Yellowjackets are affiliated with that other school, we'll always be loyal to UM. Just ask our dog, Griz!"

Theodore Stephen "Ted" Lea '94, a January graduate from the FBI Academy, is moving to New York with his wife,Tracey Keen Lea '94, and their two sons. Ted will work in the FBI's Manhattan office.

Laura E. Olson '95 is the Bozeman public relations manager for Powerhouse Technologies, a company that designs, manufactures and markets gaming equipment worldwide. Nicole Rosenleaf-Ritter '96 received her M.A. in Russian and eastern European studies from Yale in 1998. She and Chip Ritter were married this past summer in Great Falls and now live in Amherst, Mass., where Nicole is graduate programs director for The Princeton Review.

Patrick W. "Pat" Wiegleb '96 recently was designated a naval aviator and awarded his wings of gold in Pensacola, Fla. Pat will be stationed at Kanehoe Bay, Hawaii, for three years and fly a Seahawk helicopter for the Easy Rider squadron. "Just wanted to give a shout out to all Grizzlies past and present and let you all know what I've been up to," Pat writes.

Ronald James "Ron" Yates, Jr. '96, M.Acct. '98, was one of 12 candidates recently awarded the Joint Certified Public Accountant Exam Award with High Distinction, presented by Montana Society of CPAs and the Montana Board of Public Accountants. Ron is a tax specialist for KPMP Peat Marwick in Billings. His wife, Amy L. Allison Yates x'95, is a registered assistant in Billings with Salomon Smith Barney.

John C. Deming '97, high school chemistry teacher and football coach at Stanford, also is a research scientist whose filtration system for separating heavy metal from water has gained a U.S. Patent for UM. Under a two-year grant from Research Corporation and the Murdoch Charitable Trust, John has helped develop a molecule that is one-fifth the cost and nearly as efficient in capturing metals as any chemical now used. Future benefits from the system include cleaning up wastewater from mining operations and filtering herbicide and pesticide residue from irrigation runoff. An immediate benefit of John's work is that his high school students assist in various levels of the research and can see the direct results of their work.

Lewis J. Rusk '97 and his wife, Dori Freeborg Rusk x'97, live in Davison, Mich. Lewis is a group leader at the Saginaw Wolverine Secure Treatment Center, which provides treatment and services to delinquent youths in southeastern Michigan. Lewis and Dori currently are enrolled in the health education masters program at the University of Michigan's Flint campus.

Jennifer Lee Eckert '98 and Dane Thomas Sander were married Dec. 30 in Red Lodge. Jennifer was commissioned as an army second lieutenant at graduation and is finishing pilot training at Fort. Rucker, Ala.

Andrew J. Gustafson '98 recently was commissioned as a naval officer after completing Officer Candidate School at Naval Aviation Schools Command, Naval Air Station, Pensacola, Fla. Andrew received instruction in navigation, ship handling, engineering, naval warfare and management.

Heather M. Latino , J.D. '98, has associated with Paoli Law Office, P.C. in Missoula. An honors graduate, Heather served as co-editor and chief of the Montana Law Review. Her practice will focus on civil litigation, personal injury, criminal defense and family law cases.

Dan Sullivan '98 won the extremely competitive Monbusho Scholarship for graduate study at Hirosake University in Japan, where he will be attending classes from April 1999 through March 2001. Dan is the first UM student to receive this award.

Stuart Thurlkill '99 took first place in the Rich Mahan Student Portfolio category at the Atlanta Photojournalism Seminar for 40 of his best 1998 photos. Stuart received $750 and a Nikon N905 camera.
