Or e-mail your news to: alumnote@selway.umt.edu '30s Jay Ellis Ransom '34 of The Dalles, Ore., writes: "At 83, I have renewed my University of Washington Graduate School linguistic studies of the Fox Island Aleut of Nikolski and Unalaska, Alaska, that I originally spent five years on between 1936 and 1941. I retired years ago but, unfortunately, for a writer/photographer/field research ethnologist, there is no such thing as retirement...." Selden, J.D. '38 and Maryalys Marrs Frisbee '37, have retired and plan to split their time between Polson and Sun City, Ariz. Frank '37 and Thelma Warrington Shaw '37 of Deer Lodge received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the city's annual Chamber of Commerce banquet. '40s Rae C. Greene '41 published a book of poetry, Bits and Pieces of the Big Sky. He and his wife, Claudia, live in Sun City, Ariz. Keith Crandall '48 of New York City was inducted into the Greenwich Village Hall of Fame in September for advocating human services, writing for The Villager and chairing the community board. Wilbur "Will" Funk '48, M.Ed. '54, of Portland, Ore., sang a vocal recital at Central Lutheran Church in October. This May, he will guest conduct the Helena Symphony performance of Mission Mountains Suite for Orchestra, which he composed in 1959 Joseph Saltsman '48 is retired from the Foreign Service. He and his wife, Marion, live in Geneva, Switzerland. Sherman Spencer '49 lives in Stockton, Calif. He writes a garden column for the Stockton newspaper and is a music and drama critic in the Bay area. '50s Robert Holmstrom '50, J.D. '52, a judge for the 13th Judicial District since 1984, has retired. "I'd like to spend part of this cold winter in the South," he says. C.E. Crookshanks '52 recently qualified as a Naval Academy Blue and Gold officer while attending the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. Harold Knapp '53 of Polson was recently recognized on the Bison Range for his conservation projects. Richard Milne '53 retired in July after 44 years in social work. He was a caseworker in Libby, director of the Cascade County Department in Great Falls and spent 28 years with the Denver Department of Social Services. He and his wife, Dorothy, live in Littleton. They have three children and two grandchildren. Don Orlich '53, Ed.D. '63, co-wrote Teaching Strategies: A Guide to Better Instruction. The Spanish version will be available in Mexico, Spain, Latin and South America. Don lives in Pullman, Wash. Roger Anderson, M.A. '56, professor emeritus of education at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, was named president of the Iowa Retired School Personnel Association at its annual meeting in Marshalltown. George Weatherton '56 of Fargo, N.D., wrote a collection titled Stalking the Snow with Farrin Ranger. Bob Gilluly '57 has retired from the Great Falls Tribune after a career of more than 40 years. John E. "Shaun" Corette III '58, a partner in the firm of Piper and Marbury, lives in Washington, D.C. '60s Philip L. Barney M.D.'60 of Missoula was named president of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists at their fall meeting in Philadelphia. Jack Therrien '60 lives in Columbia Falls, where he owns Jack's United Liquor and Pharmacy Store. The late Angelo "Boscoe" Condie '61 was posthumously inducted into the Cortland C-Club Hall of Fame. The award is given to State University of New York College at Cortland alumni who competed as athletes in college and later distinguished themselves in their professions and communities. Clait E. Braun '62 completed his term as president of the Wildlife Society. Clait, who lives in Fort Collins, Colo., plans to leave his position as program manager at the Colorado Division of Wildlife to devote time to scientific writing. David Dale '62, M.Ed. '69, lives on the west shore of Flathead Lake and teaches Spanish at Ronan High School. He has published several books of poetry. George M. "Sonny" Gratzer '63, M.F.A. '76, retired Army captain, recently published, General Issue Blues, poetry reflecting his experiences in Vietnam. He lives in Missoula and has four grown children: Kurt, Dana, Mike and Rachel. Blaine "Butch" Hendricks '63 writes: "Since retiring from the U.S. Army in 1990, I've worked for the Florida Department of Labor as deputy regional administrator in Northeast Florida. I married Jan Somai, an Upsala University graduate. Congrats to the men's and women's athletic teams for their successes. When I was a Grizzly, success seemed to be measured by whether or not your winning percentage was above .500. Having earned ten varsity letters (track-4, basketball-3, and baseball-3) it would have been great to be on a championship team! We had fun, though. Richard Raymond, M.S. '64, lives in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. After a 27-year teaching career at Northern Idaho College, he still announces the men's basketball games. Richard was named Master Referee at the 1976-80 National Skeet Shooting Association World National Championships, 1984 North Idaho Sportsman of the Year, 1992 Idaho State Softball Hall of Fame inductee, 1993 Northern Idaho College Booster of the Year and 1997 Northern Idaho Officials Association Basketball Hall of Fame. "I certainly attribute the basis of these honors to some of my background in class and lab discipline while at UM. And...I consider myself a Griz!" Alida Wright Blair '66, M.A. '81, is a speech pathologist in Columbia Falls. Alvin Woody '67 owns Medical Management Support Services Inc. in Central Point, Ore. He corresponds regularly with Bijan Ghorashi '67 of Atlanta. Edwin Hall '68, M.A. '72, retired as executive director of the Montana Board of Crime Control. Horner '68, curator of paleontology at the Museum of the Rockies and adjunct professor of geology and biology at Montana State University, was named 1997-98 Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholar. Schelin, M.A. '68, Ph.D. '71, is provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at the University of Wisconsin in Superior. Phillip R. Van Ness '68 is a shareholder in the law firm of Webber and Thies in Urbana, Ill. Rick Cebull, J.D. '69, is a federal magistrate in Great Falls. M.A. "Crockett" Dumas '69, of the Camino Real Ranger District, Carson National Forest in Penasco, N.M., received the Vice President Gore Hammer Award for governmental re-invention at the Bolle Center for People and Forests in April 1997. Lt. Col. Linda McDonald DuMoulin, M.F.A. '69, is deputy commander of the Mt. Rainier Squadron, which does mountain search and rescue. Don Pettigrew '69 lives in Shelby and works as a CPA for Shelby Distributors. He and his wife, Eileen, have two children and two grandchildren. '70s Charles Briggs '70, M.A. '78, directed the Rocky Mountain Agency on Aging for five years and was appointed by Gov. Marc Racicot to direct the Montana Office of Community Service. Charles and his wife, Christie, live in Helena. They have five children. Ron Flickinger '70 is a counselor at North Side High School in Fort Wayne, Ind. He writes: "This year the last of three children has flown-I hope we can return to western Montana and bathe in the memories of those great undergraduate times." Quinton R. Hehn '70, Ed.D. Munzenrider '70, of St. Paul, Minn., was appointed vice president of finance and chief financial officer of St. Jude Medical. '80, of Missoula was one of four Montana educators to receive the $25,000 National Milkin Family Foundation Educator Award. Bruce is an elementary principal, adjunct professor at UM and president of the Montana Elementary and Middle School Principals Association. Orville Getz '71 is principal at Victor High School. '78, won a speaking part in Dakota Sunrise, a 100-minute movie about an orphan's search for his family. Michael lives in Dickinson, N.D., where he is choir director at Dickinson High School. Terry J. Joe Raible '79 attended the Rio Platano Biosphere Reserve of Honduras to design an integrated telecommunications network to protect the reserve and establish small business communications. James covers environmental topics for the Contra Costa Times in the San Francisco Bay area. Miles City attorney Gary Day, J.D. '81, M.A. '82, was appointed judge for the 16th Judicial District. Tim Wells '81 is president of Tabaracci and Wells in Cut Bank. He was recently appointed to the First Interstate Bank/Cut Bank Advisory Board of Directors. Tim and his wife have three children. Bret "Wild Cat" Bennett '83 writes: "I am gainfully employed at Red Lodge Mountain Resort as an agent in charge of corporate real estate sales. I'm still single after all these years, and happy. I'm looking forward to this fall's Homecoming." Sam Hubbard '83 is manager of Thrifty White Drug in Glendive and co-owner of Shooters Archery Shop. He and his wife, Kristine, have three daughters: Kendra, Alexa and Samantha.
