Letters to the EditorJust thought you might want to know who the young Griz fans on your [last] cover are. They are Brennan Teeters (left) and Nate Suckow. They have been avid Griz fans since the day they were born and have attended countless games through the years. They are the son (Nate) and nephew (Brennan) of Geri Lincoln ’88 and the grandsons of Rex Lincoln ’61. The Lincoln family owns the 10,000 Silver Dollar Bar in Haugan and has occupied the same seats on the west 50-yard-line since the stadium opened. Every home game there are three generations of Lincoln Griz fans gathered there. We were all thrilled to see their smiling faces on the cover.
Geri Lincoln [Editor’s Note: We tried to track down who the two boys were on our last cover, but a print deadline caught up with us. Thanks so much, Geri, for solving the puzzle. - JM] I am sending this message to thank you for the story about A. Clifford Edwards. I had tears in my eyes as I read his story (Winter 2001 Montanan). My seven-year-old son was diagnosed with Legg Perthes’ disease a year ago. The first doctors who recognized what was wrong with my son told us not to let him walk, for how long they didn’t know, and that there was really no treatment for it. I was devastated. My son is very active and a straight-A student. I had a pity party for a while and then learned that physical therapy can improve the symptoms of this disease. I worked my son’s butt off. He was great through all the stretching and no-impact strengthening exercises I learned about. Please thank Mr. Edwards for sharing this story. I have been in contact with other parents who are dealing with this disease and all of our children have a wonderful I-will-get-better-and-run-and-play-again attitude. I think this disease pushes them toward what they are destined for. After a year of therapy that we have done together, my son is playing baseball! Rachel Bevins I did not realize that over all these last several years I should be paying for a [voluntary] subscription to your magazine. I thought it was because I used to have two sons attending school there and that I paid all their bills, including checks made out to The Stockman. They assured me this was a high-class restaurant. My sister, Elaine Baskett Mueller, also graduated there in ’39. While Elaine was going to school there, I was in high school in Big Timber and became a confirmed Griz fan. That was the era of another very successful team. Heroes of that time were Popovich and Lazetich. When I went to college at Northwestern University, I had an impossible task trying to teach my fraternity brothers there in Evanston and at medical school in Chicago the words to Up with Montana. They’d stick with me until it came to “the squeal of the pig will float on the air, from the tummy of the grizzly bear.” At that point, those idiots would all have a big laugh and go their way, never having learned a single verse. I could only surmise that they had no musical talent. Go Griz,
L.M. Baskett, M.D. Just a note to tell all of you who work on the Montanan what a great job you are doing. The articles are so diverse, interesting, and informative and transmit the energy and excitement of the campus. Some of my friends just returned from their fiftieth college reunion in Missoula and they are singing the praises of the experience as much as I did nine years ago. I’m looking forward to the sixtieth next year. UM is “unbeatable.” I wouldn’t trade my experiences there—and the preparation for life—for anything. My best to all of you!
